The name Devo comes from the concept of "de-evolution" and the band's related idea that instead of continuing to evolve, mankind had begun to regress, as evidenced by the dysfunction and herd mentality of American society.

Devo disbanded in the early 1990s, though they occasionally reunited for concerts. In 2024 the documentary film Devo, directed by Chris Smith, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

Devo's hit single, “Whip It,” became an MTV staple and the group's only success of this stature. For ages, they've either been labeled a one-hit wonder or a pioneering musical force like no other.

DEVO started out as a Punk Rock/Post Punk band, who put a high priority on spreading awareness about devolution, even naming themselves after the concept. They started making music videos right from the start, and are considered by some to be pioneers of the music video.
